Fantastic Phil Spector Interview 1969

Phil Spector did a lot of GREAT work.  Here is an amazing interview with the man from Rolling Stone in 1969.  There is tons of cool stuff including talk of the Beatles, Stones, Dylan, Motown, the music business.  Check it out HERE.

Happy Birthday Townes : Rare Footage

Today would have been Townes Van Zandt's 69th Birthday.  In honor of him, here's some rare footage of him playing in a Sound Studio in Austin, TX.  From about the early 90's.

Very rare John Lennon Interview

Here is a very rare Lennon interview where he talks about every track on Abbey Road with a Luxembourg DJ in 1969.  Yes, I know the picture is earlier than '69...'66, I think?

The American Folk-Blues Festival '62-'66

If you haven't seen this, you should check it out.  This particular clip features T-Bone Walker, Mississippi Fred McDowell, Otis Rush, Lonnie Johnson, Muddy Waters, need I say more?  There are other clips on youtube with Sonny Boy Williamson, Rosetta Tharpe, and many more that shouldn't be missed.

Serge Gainsbourg : All the things you are

Here's a strange and rare clip of Serge not being like Serge at all.  For those that know him, obviously he's big into jazz, but I've never seen him this straight ahead.  And, I couldn't post it here (because people disable embedding) but if you haven't seen Serge telling Whitney Houston scandalous things, check that out on youtube.

Carla Thomas : Every Ounce of Strength

Here's a clip from 1965...its Carla Thomas doing "Every Ounce of Strength."  The audio on the clip is not the best, but you still get to see a rare glimpse of the young soul singer.  Maybe you had a chance to download some of her stuff from the Complete Stax Collection I posted previously...below is some more of her stuff.

Bobby "Boris" Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers : The Monster Mash

I am proud to say that this is the very very first record I owned.  It was the record below (I believe), and I can picture the weird cover...it seemed like it was from outer space. I was about 6 or 7 and played it on a Fisher Price record player and the world was alright.  Pickett and the Crypt-Kickers (nice name) made song after song of novelty "Ghouly-Halloweeny" tunes, and it gets a bit old, but this is a true classic.

Dock Boggs : "Country Blues"

The first time I saw video of Skip James or Mississippi John Hurt or Son House, it was like seeing video of a ghost.  These were legends of the 20's that made their mark on shellac wax cuttings and went back to their sharecropping shacks; not compatible with Youtube and Google.  But here's another one that surprised me: none other than Dock Boggs.  After listening to him for years, I built an image of what I thought he looked like (even though I've seen pictures)...this wasn't exactly it.  Dock started recording in 1926/27 and did "revival" recordings in the 60's as well.

Sonny Boy Williamson (II) - Bye Bye Bird

Possibly the coolest, most badass man ever to walk the earth, its Sonny Boy Williamson...aka Rice Miller aka Willie Williamson aka the Goat aka Footsie.  It was actually his radio sponsor on the King Biscuit Time show that started billing him as SBW, to capitalize on the fame of another popular blues singer, named Sonny Boy Williamson.  His year of birth is unknown, dates range anywhere from 1899 to 1912.  He died in 1965.

Los Bravos: "Going Nowhere"

Spain's Los Bravos from 1966 with an amazing song...the video is almost distractingly ridiculous...pure 60's.  This song was also featured in the Nuggets 2 Compilation.  

And, just like a Phil Spector drag racing song : "One of Los Bravos' founding members Manuel Fernandez committed suicide on 20 May 1967, at the age of 23, after the death of his bride Lottie Rey in an auto accident."

September for lovers: Yves Montand "Les Feuilles Mortes"

Yves Montand was a very popular Italian born French singer and actor.  He was discovered by Edith Piaf in Paris, and she became his mentor, and lover.  He later went on to marry several times, and have affairs with high profile women, like Marilyn Monroe.  Yes, September is for lovers. 

""[H]e died on the set... On the very last day, after his very last shot. It was the very last night and we were doing retakes. He finished what he was doing and then he just died. And the film tells the story of an old man who dies from a heart attack, which is the same thing that happened!"

S.E. Rogie - "I wish I was a Cowboy"

From Sierra Leone, its Highlife/Palm Wine guitarist and singer S.E. Rogie.  Born in 1926, he began performing early, while working as a tailor.  He started playing music professionally in the 60's.  He recorded mostly during the 70's and 80's and died in 1994, shortly after releasing his last album "Dead Men Don't Smoke Marijuana."

Waiphot Phetsuphan เจ็ดปีที่รอคอย- ไวพจน์ (Thailand)

Waiphot Phetsuphan is a Thai music legend.  I don't know if he's still alive or not...He started in the 60's and proved himself a talented songwriter and multi-instrumentalist.  About half way through his career, his lyrics became religiously oriented; focusing on simple Buddhist themes.  For more info check out StereoMono, and Monrakplengthai.

Here is a crazy group from Italy called Six Lions.  In the clip above, Patrizia is singing with them.  I can't find any info about the group, except that they're from the 60's and they did some crazy beat/garage stuff including some covers.  Download an album below.

September for lovers : Porter Wagoner - The Cold Hard Facts of Life

September may be for lovers, but love can be dark.  Porter Wagoner often showed the darker side of love.  This is a great dramatic story song from 1967.  So "Who taught who, the Cold Hard Facts of Life?"  Yes, September is for lovers.  You can download the brilliant album below.  (THE LINK IS FIXED, IF YOU CHECKED EARLIER)

Sir Victor Uwaifo - Kirikisi

Here's a track by Nigeria's Victor Uwaifo.  His biggest hit was in 1966, called "Guitar boy and Mamiwater," which was "inspired by an encounter (which he has long maintained actually occurred) with a mami wata (mermaid) while lounging on Bar Beach in Lagos."

"Uwaifo's hobbies include swimming, bodybuilding, gaming, reading, writing, and bringing up other people's children."

Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas

The wonderfully titled Brazilian Guitar Fuzz Bananas is a 2LP (or CD) set featuring "Tropicalia Psychedelic Masterpieces from '67-'76."  It's well packaged, it comes with a huge booklet and 3D glasses.  

From the record, The Youngsters are doing the Lennon/McCartney Beatles/Stones song "I wanna be your man."  I think they do it better than the Beatles or the Stones.
